In a concerted effort to tackle rising crime rates, Northern Cape police have intensified operations targeting contact crimes, robbery, and housebreaking across the province, resulting in the arrest of more than 200 suspects since Monday, 1 July 2024, stated Colonel Cherelle Ehlers.

According to Colonel Ehlers, these high-density operations focused on identified hotspot areas where law enforcement teams executed roadblocks, vehicle checkpoints, and conducted extensive stop-and-search operations. Over the course of the initiative, 2,561 individuals and 1,369 vehicles underwent scrutiny, leading to significant arrests and seizures.

“Detectives have been pivotal in tracing and apprehending 112 wanted suspects involved in serious offenses such as murder, rape, and assault causing grievous bodily harm,” Colonel Ehlers reported. Additionally, multi-disciplinary teams arrested 110 individuals involved in illegal activities including drug and liquor dealing, robbery, attempted murder, assault, burglary, and vehicle theft.

The operations also included compliance inspections at various premises, resulting in the closure of five unlicensed liquor outlets and the confiscation of over 500 litres of alcohol. Further confiscations included dangerous weapons, ammunition, and a substantial quantity of drugs such as dagga, Tik, and mandrax tablets.

Colonel Ehlers highlighted the proactive engagement with communities throughout the province, aimed at addressing community needs and raising awareness on crucial issues like domestic violence, rural safety, fraud prevention, and housebreaking. These efforts encompassed door-to-door visits, distribution of informational pamphlets at shopping centres, and stakeholder meetings.

“These disruptive actions will persist without pause to combat priority crimes in our province’s most affected areas,” assured Colonel Ehlers. She urged community members to continue sharing information about criminal activities, emphasizing the importance of community involvement in bringing perpetrators to justice.

The concerted efforts of law enforcement agencies and community cooperation are pivotal in ensuring safer environments and reducing criminal activities across Northern Cape.
