A suspected industrial scale crystal methamphetamine manufacturing operation has been dealt a major blow after the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation, better known as the Hawks, and its law enforcement partners uncovered a clandestine drug laboratory on a farm in Musina.

Five suspects were arrested during a late-night operation on Thursday, August 20, with drugs and laboratory equipment carrying an estimated street value of R600 million, together with an undisclosed amount of cash, seized from the premises.

The operation was intelligence driven and followed a two month investigation into suspected drug manufacturing activities at the farm in the Vhembe District.

The Hawks said the discovery exposed what investigators believe was a sophisticated, industrial scale operation established to manufacture dangerous illicit substances for distribution.

The five suspects, aged between 20 and 47, comprise two Mexican nationals, two Zimbabwean nationals and one Malawian national.

The operation involved the Hawks, the South African Police Service, the South African Narcotics Bureau Head Office, Crime Intelligence Head Office, Hawks Limpopo, the Special Task Force, the Drug Enforcement Agency and Homeland Security.

The Hawks described the operation as a significant disruption to organised drug manufacturing in the province.

According to Colonel Avele Fumba, the breakthrough demonstrates the importance of sustained intelligence led investigations in dismantling sophisticated criminal operations involved in the illicit drug trade.

The operation also marks the third clandestine drug laboratory shut down in Limpopo, according to the Hawks.

Major General Adv. Gopz Govender, Provincial Head of the Hawks in Limpopo, said the seizure represented more than the removal of drugs from the streets.

We have struck at the machinery behind the drug trade.

Govender said the R600 million seizure represented the disruption of an entire criminal enterprise and warned that investigators would pursue the financial and human networks behind the operation.

We will follow the money, the networks and every person connected to this operation. There will be nowhere to hide.

Limpopo Provincial Commissioner Lieutenant General Jan Scheepers said the operation reflected law enforcement’s determination to prevent criminal syndicates from turning communities into markets for illicit drugs.

We will not allow our communities to become markets for criminal syndicates.

Those who manufacture and distribute these dangerous substances must know that law enforcement is closing in on them. This operation demonstrates that we will act decisively against the drug trade.

The seizure adds another major drug-related enforcement breakthrough to a year in which authorities have intensified efforts to disrupt organised manufacturing and trafficking networks across South Africa.

In the Musina case, however, investigators have not indicated whether the suspects or the laboratory are linked to any other known criminal network or previous drug seizures.

The five suspects are expected to appear before the Musina Magistrate’s Court on Monday, August 24, where they are expected to face charges relating to the manufacture and possession of illicit drugs.

The Hawks said additional charges could be added as the investigation progresses.

For now, the focus is on establishing the full extent of the alleged operation, tracing the flow of money and identifying any other individuals or networks connected to the suspected laboratory.

The R600 million estimate, provided by law enforcement, refers to the estimated street value of the drugs and laboratory equipment seized.

    The investigation remains ongoing.
