A police operation at a property near Hartbeespoort Dam has uncovered what authorities believe is a multimillion rand facility used to manufacture the illicit drug Mandrax.

South African police have uncovered what they believe to be a Mandrax manufacturing laboratory at a property in the Hartbeespoort Dam area of North West province, in an operation being overseen by the provincial police commissioner.

Lieutenant General Adams, the North West Provincial Commissioner, was at the scene as police continued their operation on Tuesday.

SAPS members discovered a facility believed to have been used for the illicit manufacture of Mandrax. Police were still assessing the site and determining the quantity of drugs and other material recovered.

The estimated street value of the seizure had not yet been established.

Authorities have not indicated whether arrests have been made in connection with the discovery.

The operation remained active, with investigators expected to determine the scale of the alleged manufacturing operation and establish whether the property was linked to a wider drug-trafficking network.

    The investigation is continuing.
