South African police have uncovered what is being described as a major illicit drug manufacturing operation in Musina, Limpopo, with the drugs reportedly valued at more than R600 million.
The discovery, reported on Friday morning, is still developing, and details surrounding the operation remain limited.
According to initial reports, police uncovered a laboratory believed to have been involved in the manufacture of illicit drugs. Five suspected drug dealers have reportedly been arrested in connection with the operation.
The scale of the seizure, if confirmed, would place the Musina operation among the country’s significant drug-related enforcement actions in recent years.
The discovery comes amid intensified efforts by South African law-enforcement agencies to disrupt organised drug manufacturing and trafficking networks.
In May, police dismantled a large suspected drug-manufacturing facility at a farm in Swartruggens, North West, arresting 11 suspects. The operation involved SAPS specialised units, Crime Intelligence, Organised Crime Investigations and the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation.
Limpopo has also featured prominently in major drug trafficking investigations this year. At the Beitbridge border post in May, authorities intercepted a truck carrying 713 kilograms of methaqualone, a substance used in the manufacture of illicit drugs. The consignment was valued at nearly R1 billion, according to reports. Three foreign nationals were arrested.
The Musina discovery is particularly significant because of the town’s position on the country’s northern border and its role as a major road and commercial corridor between South Africa and Zimbabwe.
However, it is too early to establish whether the Musina laboratory is connected to any of the other drug manufacturing or trafficking operations previously uncovered in South Africa. No such connection has been established in the information currently available.
Police have yet to publicly provide a full account of the operation, including the precise nature of the drugs recovered, the quantity seized, the location of the laboratory, the identities of those arrested and the charges they are expected to face.
Those details are expected to emerge as investigators process the scene and the suspects appear before court.
