Police in Mogwase have launched a manhunt after a brazen cash-in-transit heist unfolded on Tuesday evening, 31 December 2024, in Moruleng Village. The dramatic incident, which took place around 6 p.m., left a cash van and a getaway car engulfed in flames.

According to Police Lieutenant Colonel Sam Tselanyane, the cash van, carrying two security officers, was traveling from Moruleng village towards Mogwase when it was ambushed at Letsheng section. A Mercedes Benz sedan blocked the van just before a speed hump, while armed assailants opened fire on the escort vehicle, forcing it to halt.

“The escort crew managed to escape unharmed, but the two officers inside the cash van were held at gunpoint and stripped of their firearms. Explosives were used to blow open the cash van, which led to both the van and the Mercedes Benz catching fire.”

The suspects, described as heavily armed, made off with an undisclosed amount of cash. They fled the scene in a convoy of vehicles, including a BMW, a white Toyota Fortuner, and a white Ford Ranger double-cab bakkie.

No injuries were reported, but the violent nature of the heist has left the community shaken. The Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (Hawks) has taken charge of the investigation.

“An unconfirmed number of suspects are involved, and efforts are underway to track and apprehend them,” a police spokesperson said.

The stretch of road where the heist occurred was temporarily closed as forensic experts combed the area for evidence.
