South African police have arrested two men in separate incidents involving the brutal murders of their partners in the OR Tambo District of the Eastern Cape. Both cases, which occurred within hours of each other, have highlighted the ongoing crisis of gender-based violence and femicide (GBVF) in the country.

In the first incident, a 32-year-old man allegedly murdered his 24-year-old wife late on Monday, 30 December 2024, in Nkonkweni locality, Qumbu. According to police reports, the attack was fueled by suspicions of infidelity. The suspect was arrested and is scheduled to appear before the Qumbu Magistrate’s Court on Thursday, 2 January 2025, to face charges of murder.

Just hours later, in the early hours of Tuesday morning, 31 December 2024, another gruesome incident unfolded in Mqanduli at Mancam locality, Lower Ngqungqu. A 47-year-old man allegedly strangled his 40-year-old girlfriend using a belt. Police records indicate that the man was assaulted by members of the community before being taken into custody. He is currently under police guard in a hospital and will appear in the Mqanduli Magistrate’s Court once discharged.

Major General Norman Modishana, the OR Tambo District Commissioner, expressed his dismay at the tragic events. “The senseless loss of two women at the hands of those who vowed to love and protect them is deeply saddening,” he said. “These heinous acts of GBVF, especially against the vulnerable in our society, must come to an end. As the police, we will never rest until we conquer this fight.”

Major General Modishana also extended his condolences to the families of the victims, vowing that law enforcement would pursue justice in both cases.
