Alleged political fixer Brown Mogotsi is expected to apply for bail at the Johannesburg Magistrate’s Court on Monday as he faces a string of charges linked to what police believe was a staged assassination attempt last year.

Mogotsi faces charges of unlawful possession of a firearm and ammunition, discharging a firearm in a built-up area, defeating the ends of justice and perjury after allegedly orchestrating a fake hit on his life in November 2025.

His bail application was postponed last week after prosecutors requested additional time to verify his residential address.

The 49 year old was arrested on May 15 shortly after appearing before the Madlanga Commission, where he testified on allegations related to corruption.

Police say ballistic evidence has linked cartridges recovered from the scene of the alleged shooting in Vosloorus, east of Johannesburg, to several other criminal cases, including an armed robbery in Roodepoort in 2020.

National police spokesperson Athlenda Mathe said investigators had added more charges after the ballistic report connected the firearm used in the incident to other crimes.

“We also added further charges, including possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition, because our ballistics report indicates that the firearm used on the evening when shots were fired at Mr Brown Mogotsi’s vehicle has been linked to other crimes as well,” Mathe said.

“In 2020, it was linked to a Roodepoort armed robbery case in which a motorist was robbed of his belongings and shots were fired.”

Police have not yet recovered the firearm allegedly used in the incident. Mogotsi’s legal representative has maintained that his client did not own a firearm.

Mogotsi briefly appeared in the Johannesburg Magistrate’s Court on May 18, when the matter was postponed to Monday for a formal bail application.

The case has drawn significant public attention because of Mogotsi’s alleged political connections and his recent testimony before the commission of inquiry. Prosecutors are expected to oppose bail as investigations continue into the alleged staged attack and the firearm’s links to other criminal activities.
