Pretoria CBD erupted in violence on Wednesday 28 August 2019 following the killing on Tuesday 27 August 2019 of one taxi driver by the suspected Nigerian drug dealer when taxi drivers confronted drug dealers.

According to Media reports on Tuesday and Wednesday, taxi operators found people, believed to be police officers, were allegedly involved in the selling of drugs on Tuesday.

Angry taxi operators then used the city’s buses to block traffic to “deal” with the nyaope (drug) boys.

A shooting which resulted in the death of a taxi driver is reported to have incited the riots, which led to two A Re Yeng buses, three Tshwane Bus Service (TBS) buses, a Gautrain bus and two trucks being utilised to blockade the roads. A Re Yeng and TBS operations were halted for the rest of the day in the interest of safety.

Several shops believed to be owned by Foreign Nationals in the CBD were looted and set alight as Police and emergency services we battling crowds.

Below are some of the reactions about today’s events.

#pretoriacbd illegal foreign nationals are a virus to this country. They do as they please, they disrespect us, they bring drugs into SA, they are killing the youth with their drugs, the future of RSA and get away with it. I have no sympathy for them. #Pretoriashutdown
