A 42vyear old Botswana police officer allegedly shot and killed a 47 year old woman in Dibete early Tuesday before turning the firearm on himself, according to the Botswana Police Service.

The officer, who was stationed at Dibete Police Station and was on duty when the incident occurred, allegedly used a service rifle in the shooting, police said.

“Preliminary investigations revealed that the officer gained entry into the woman’s house before allegedly shooting her,” Superintendent Selebatso Mooketsi said.

The officer subsequently died by suicide after turning the firearm on himself, according to police.

Police have launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident and are seeking to establish what led to the shooting.

Mooketsi said the investigation remained at a preliminary stage as officers worked to establish the cause of the incident.

The shooting took place in the early hours of Tuesday 6 October in Dibete. The Botswana Police Service has not indicated a possible motive.
