A 38 year old man was arrested during a joint law enforcement operation in Acornhoek after police allegedly discovered illicit cigarettes and an unlicensed firearm at a local spaza shop, the South African Police Service said.
The operation was conducted by the South African Police Service in collaboration with the Department of Community Safety, Security and Liaison, as well as the Stock Theft Unit, as part of ongoing compliance inspections targeting spaza shops and livestock benchmark operations within the Acornhoek policing area.
According to police, officers visited a spaza shop situated at the Acornhoek Old Complex during the inspection campaign. While searching the premises, members allegedly uncovered illicit cigarettes and a firearm for which no valid licence could be produced.
The suspect was immediately taken into custody and is expected to face charges relating to the possession of illicit cigarettes and unlawful possession of a firearm.
Police said the operation forms part of continued efforts aimed at addressing criminal activities and ensuring compliance with South African laws in the area.
The seized items will form part of ongoing investigations.
