Award winning South African artist and cultural activist Nomsa Mazwai has announced the launch of Sober Fest, a family oriented music and wellness festival set to take place on April 26, 2026, at the Soweto Theatre.
The event, scheduled from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. over the Freedom Day weekend, aims to promote what Mazwai describes as “a New Freedom”, one centered on substance free living, community well being and conscious celebration.
Mazwai said the initiative comes against the backdrop of South Africa’s high levels of substance abuse, which she noted carry significant social and economic costs. According to estimates cited by the organizers, alcohol related harm accounts for between 10% and 12% of the country’s gross domestic product, while nearly half of South African drinkers engage in binge drinking, figures that far exceed global averages.
“These patterns are closely linked to violence, crime, mental health challenges, reduced productivity and long term social harm,” Mazwai said, adding that the festival is intended to provide both awareness and access to support for individuals and families affected by addiction.
The festival will feature performances by leading South African artists, including Thandiswa Mazwai, Maleh and Nomisupasta. The lineup also includes DJs Kenzhero and Vester Sdizo, with the program hosted by Ntsiki Mazwai.
Maleh said the event represents more than entertainment. “Sober Fest is not just any event. It is a declaration that joy, freedom and celebration don’t need substances to be enjoyable,” she said, emphasizing the importance of safe, family friendly spaces.
In addition to music, the festival will offer a range of wellness-focused activities, including breathwork sessions led by Lebo Nke, yoga facilitated by Thando from Here. Now, a sound bath experience and guided walking tours to local liberation heritage sites. Comedian Khanyisa Bunu is also scheduled to perform.
Organizers said the event will include a supervised children’s play area and a marketplace featuring food, crafts and wellness products, reinforcing its family oriented focus.
Thandiswa Mazwai said the initiative reflects a broader social need. “South Africa has a serious problem with substance abuse and this is an opportunity for us to redefine socialising,” she said.
Tickets for the event are available through Webtickets.
