In a dramatic operation along the banks of the Limpopo River, South African authorities have retrieved a stolen Toyota Fortuner trapped in the water, highlighting ongoing efforts to dismantle cross border vehicle smuggling syndicates operating into neighboring countries.

The vehicle, confirmed to have been stolen earlier this month in Witbank, Mpumalanga, was recovered on Tuesday during a joint operation in the Masisi policing area. It was found stranded mid river, a common route used by criminals to ferry stolen goods into Zimbabwe and other neighboring states.

Provincial Commissioner of Police in Limpopo, Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe, praised the multidisciplinary team responsible for the recovery, specifically citing the Niani Cross Border Team, a partnership comprising Business Against Crime and the local farming community.

“This team remains one of the South African Police Service’s most valued strategic partners,” Lieutenant General Hadebe said in a statement released Wednesday. The unit works in close collaboration with the South African National Defence Force (SANDF), the Border Management Authority (BMA), and Neighbourhood Watch.

Their coordinated efforts have been described as a critical force multiplier. “Their coordinated efforts, vigilance, and swift response have played a critical role in disrupting criminal activities along the borderline,” the statement noted.

The recovery of the Fortuner was not an isolated incident. In a related series of events, authorities also seized a Nissan Patrol shortly after it had crossed the border. Preliminary investigations indicate that vehicle was reported stolen in Brooklyn, Gauteng, also during February 2026.

Furthermore, a Toyota Quantum abandoned by suspects in Mutale was recovered. Police believe it was also destined for smuggling across the border.

Lieutenant General Hadebe commended the Cross Border team for their unwavering commitment and vital role in supporting law enforcement efforts. She emphasized that the public private partnership serves as a powerful force multiplier.

“The team continues to demonstrate exceptional commitment to safeguarding our borders. Their partnership with SAPS and other law enforcement agencies serves as a powerful force multiplier and contributes significantly to the prevention and disruption of vehicle smuggling syndicates,” Lieutenant General Hadebe said. “We remain committed to strengthening these partnerships to ensure that criminals find no safe passage through our borders.”

Police investigations into the recovered vehicles are ongoing, and no arrests have been made at this stage.
