The Operation Shanela initiative, which involves community participation and private business collaboration, continues to make significant strides in combating crime through a multidisciplinary approach. Sergeant Mahlomola Kareli reported that the operation’s tactics—stop and search, roadblocks, intensive patrols in identified hotspots, and increased visibility—have led to the arrest and detention of 785 suspects.

Among those arrested were 37 individuals for drug possession, nine for rape, 20 for murder, and 19 for attempted murder. Additionally, 24 suspects were detained for possessing dangerous weapons. The fight against illegal mining saw 164 undocumented people taken into custody. Eight suspects were arrested for illegal firearm possession, 24 for driving under the influence, and 201 for assault.

    Key Arrests and Recoveries:

    • In Botshabelo, a 53-year-old man was apprehended with an unlicensed firearm at his residence.
    • Four suspects, aged between 35 and 40, were arrested on R700 after the Bloemfontein Flying Squad received a tip about a hijacking in Bergman Square. Two firearms were recovered from the suspects.
    • Three African males, aged 33 to 27, were arrested in Intabazwe, Harrismith, with an unlicensed firearm. Their vehicle was stopped in Las Vegas following a tip-off.
    • In Tshiame, a 34-year-old man was arrested for drug possession after sachets of Nyaope and money were recovered.
    • An illegal shebeen in Bethlehem was shut down, and the owner was fined for operating without a valid liquor license.
    • In Petrusburg, two men were arrested with illicit cigarettes worth an estimated R1.7 million found in the back of their bakkie.
    • The Welkom K9 Unit, along with Crime Intelligence, arrested a well-known drug dealer in a white Toyota Tazz. Crystal Meth and Crack Cocaine worth an estimated R250,000 were confiscated.

Sergeant Kareli highlighted, “This week’s operation led to the recovery of four unlicensed firearms and ammunition. All these firearms have been taken for ballistics testing.”

Detective tracing operations also resulted in the arrest of over 263 suspects for various cases. Additionally, 56 drivers were processed for contravening the Traffic Act.

“Operations are continuing throughout the province, and we urge community members to continue providing information on crimes and work with police to identify potential suspects,” Sergeant Kareli added.
