The City of Cape has informed the Capetonians about road closure between Jakes Gerwel and Valhalla Drive as Bonteheuwel residents have embarked on a peaceful march.
The residents are protesting against a spike in gang shootings where several people have been injured or killed in recent weeks.
The Western Cape has been struggling gang violence which has led to the Provincial Government calling on the National Government to send the army in gang infestested areas, a call which the National Government repeatedly turned down.
Today’s protest follows another one where residents of Kensington blocked roads protesting against high violence rate in their neighbourhood.
According to Bonteheuwel Gangwatch:
It is not just gang violence alone that people need to endure, taxi violence is also a huge problem, in all this violence the fighting is for economical control over illegal business that’s not regulated by authorities. The feeling is our security agencies let things past till it becomes uncontrollable. For instance 15 years back meth ‘tik’ was a no go for Cape Town drug users, today it’s becoming the drug of choice, this with its neuro effects is a contributor to gang violence.
Police and other law enforcement agencies are monitoring the situation.
