The lawyers for Zimbabwe’s main opposition party; the MDC Alliance have on Friday 10 August 2018 filed papers in court challenging the election results proclaiming Emmerson Mnangagwa as president.

The Zimbabwean Electoral Commission declared Mnangagwa the winner of the poll held on 30 July 2018, but the MDC Alliance leader; Advocate Nelson Chamisa has maintained that the elections were rigged and that he has evidence to show that he won the elections and he was cheated.

Meanwhile, the British Minister of State for Africa; Harriet Baldwin has urged opposition leader Nelson Chamisa and the Zimbabwean Foreign Ministry to ensure calm in the country while challenges to the election result are considered.

The court has 14 days to make a ruling on the case. Meanwhile Mnangagwa’s inauguration which was scheduled for the 12 August 2018 weekend, has according to Zimbabwean Justice Department been postponed pending the outcome of the poll’s challenge.

The MDC Alliance lawyers have indicated that they want the election results overturned. They have listed as evidence, vital poll papers and V11 forms that they allege to show attempt to tamper with election figures.

President Mnangagwa and the ruling ZANU-PF have welcomed the court action.
