The MEC for Co-operative Governance, Jerry Ndou, should immediately suspend Mogalakwena Municipal officials who are alleged to have been involved in an irregular fuel transaction of more than R2.9 million during November of 2017 to February 2018. This call has been made by the Democratic Alliance in the Mogalakwena Local Municipality.

In a statement released Wednesday 08 August 2018, the Party’s councillor in Mogalakwena; Korny Dekker says the DA is in possession of a report that confirms serious financial loss by the municipality as a result of fraudulent fuel transactions by municipal officials.

It has come to light that officials have used the Municipality’s petrol cards, and therefore the people’s money, to pay for petrol for their private vehicles. The matter was brought to the attention of the Municipal Manager to establish urgent investigations into the transactions that involves Technical Department and Community Service Department vehicles to the tune of R1.95 million and R963 289 respectively.

According to Dekker, the investigations were conducted after it emerged that none of the registration numbers on the merchant or garage slips did not belong to the municipality and after it was found that all transactions exceeded the fuel cards allocated capacity.

The criminal case was opened at Mahwelereng Police Station and was taken over by Hawks for further investigation, but to date, no arrests have been made.
