Police in Limpopo province have arrested a 31-year-old woman suspected of murdering and dismembering her 42-year-old boyfriend and burying his remains in a shallow grave behind his home in Morutji Village, Bolobedu South.

The mutilated body of Isaiah Thomas Maphalle was discovered on Thursday wrapped in a maize-meal sack after local residents raised the alarm and alerted authorities. Officers responding to the scene unearthed the shallow grave at the rear of the victim’s residence in the rural community near Tzaneen.

Following a rapid investigation, police took Mr Maphalle’s girlfriend into custody the same day. Provincial police spokespersons confirmed the arrest but said the motive for the killing remains under active investigation.

The suspect, whose identity has not yet been released, is scheduled to make her first appearance in the Tzaneen Magistrate’s Court on Monday on a charge of murder. Investigators have indicated that the probe is continuing and further charges may follow.

Violent crime, including gender-linked killings, remains a persistent challenge in parts of rural South Africa, where domestic disputes occasionally escalate into lethal attacks. The case has shocked the tight-knit Morutji community and drawn renewed attention to the pressures facing policing in remote areas of Limpopo.

Police have appealed for any witnesses or individuals with information to come forward as the investigation proceeds.
