An 18-year-old father has been arrested in connection with the brutal murder of his five-month-old biological son at Jimmy Jones Village near Malamulele, Limpopo, in what police have described as a “heartbreaking act of violence.”
According to a statement issued by the South African Police Service (SAPS) in Limpopo, the incident occurred on Tuesday morning, October 7, 2025. The suspect was apprehended later that night, at approximately 22:00, following an intensive investigation by local detectives.
The Provincial Commissioner of Police in Limpopo, Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe, commended the swift action of law enforcement officers in apprehending the suspect. “I commend the detectives for their swift and dedicated efforts that led to the suspect’s arrest within hours of the crime,” she said.
Police reported that the child’s mother arrived at the Malamulele Police Station to report a case of domestic violence after she was allegedly assaulted by her boyfriend, who is also the infant’s father. While filing the complaint, she told officers that the suspect had repeatedly assaulted their baby.
Fearing for her life, the woman fled from their home, leaving the child behind in the suspect’s care. Police officers immediately accompanied her to the residence. Upon arrival, they discovered the lifeless body of the baby lying on the floor.
Emergency Medical Services were summoned to the scene, where the infant was declared dead. Preliminary investigations indicated that the child had sustained visible injuries to the head and face, suggesting that he had been severely assaulted before succumbing to his injuries.
“The baby had visible injuries on the head and face, indicating that he had been brutally assaulted before succumbing to his injuries,” the SAPS statement read.
Lieutenant General Hadebe described the crime as “a heartbreaking act of violence that no child should ever endure” and called it “an unimaginable betrayal of parental responsibility and humanity.”
“It is deeply distressing and unacceptable that an innocent life has been lost in such a cruel manner,” she said. “We urge community members to come forward with any information that can help our investigators locate and arrest the suspect so that justice can take its course.”
Police confirmed that a case of murder has been opened. The suspect, arrested later the same evening, is expected to appear before the Malamulele Magistrate’s Court on Thursday, October 9, 2025, facing a charge of murder.
Authorities in the Vhembe District continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the case, which has sent shockwaves through the rural community of Jimmy Jones Village.
Lieutenant General Hadebe reaffirmed the police’s commitment to protecting vulnerable members of society, particularly women and children, and to ensuring that the justice system holds perpetrators of domestic and gender-based violence accountable.
“The loss of an innocent life in such a horrific manner cannot and will not be tolerated,” she said.
The case remains under investigation.
