Police have arrested a driver and seized 240 kilograms of dagga, with an estimated street value of R960 000, following a high speed pursuit involving members of the South African Police Service (SAPS) and private security personnel in Tshwane on Saturday morning.

The arrest took place on 7 November 2026 after police officers conducting crime prevention patrols along Sefako Makgatho Drive, near Kolonnade Shopping Centre, noticed a blue Volkswagen Tiguan attempting to enter the shopping centre while its entrance gate was still closed.

According to Captain Johan van Dyk, spokesperson for SAPS in Gauteng, the driver changed direction and sped away after noticing the police vehicle.

“When the driver spotted the police vehicle, he immediately turned around and sped off along Sefako Makgatho Drive,” van Dyk said.

Police activated their blue lights and siren in an attempt to stop the vehicle, but the driver allegedly ignored the instructions and continued travelling at high speed.

Assistance was subsequently requested through the Sinoville Community Policing Forum (CPF) radio network, prompting Proshield Security personnel to join the pursuit.

The chase continued until the vehicle was eventually stopped in the Bon Accord area along the R101.

A search of the Volkswagen Tiguan uncovered several bags containing dagga weighing a combined 240 kilograms.

The drugs have an estimated street value of R960 000.

Further investigations revealed another potential irregularity involving the vehicle. According to van Dyk, checks on its registration details established that the number plates did not correspond with the Volkswagen Tiguan.

“The registration number was in fact registered to a Toyota Hilux,” he said.

The driver was arrested and is facing charges of dealing in and possession of dagga. The vehicle was also confiscated and booked in as it was allegedly used in the commission of a crime.

The suspect is expected to appear before court on Monday, 9 November 2026.

Tshwane District Commissioner Major General Samuel Thine commended the SAPS members and Proshield Security personnel for their response and cooperation, which led to the arrest and seizure.

Thine emphasised the importance of cooperation between law enforcement agencies, community structures and private security companies in tackling crime.

He reiterated that such partnerships remain important in strengthening crime prevention initiatives and ensuring that individuals involved in criminal activities are brought to book.
