Tyla Takes South African Pop to the World

For Tyla, global pop stardom has not meant leaving Johannesburg behind. If anything, the 24 year old singer has made her South African identity one of the defining features of a career that has moved with remarkable speed from local promise to international prominence.

Her breakthrough came with “Water,” the 2023 single that fused contemporary pop and R&B with amapiano, the South African genre built around deep bass, piano melodies and distinctive log drums. The song became a worldwide hit, reaching No. 7 on the Billboard Hot 100 and making Tyla the highest-charting African female solo artist on that chart at the time.

In February 2024, “Water” earned Tyla the inaugural Grammy Award for Best African Music Performance. She was 22. The award placed her alongside, rather than apart from, a rapidly expanding generation of African artists whose music has moved decisively into the international mainstream.

Her self titled debut album, released in March 2024, broadened the picture. It combined amapiano with pop, R&B and Afrobeats, with appearances from artists including Tems and Travis Scott. Rather than treating “Water” as a formula to repeat, the album presented Tyla as a performer interested in crossing musical boundaries while keeping her South African roots audible.

That approach has continued on APOP, her second album, released in July 2026. The record expands her palette while returning repeatedly to the sounds and musical history of Johannesburg. Collaborations include Zara Larsson, MaWhoo, Babalwa M and the Johannesburg deep-house group Liquideep. Critics have described the album as an evolution of the polished “popiano” sound that first brought her international attention.

Now the singer is preparing for her most ambitious concert undertaking. The 34 date APOP World Tour begins in Europe in October, moves through North America in November and December, and concludes with African dates in Lagos, Cape Town and Johannesburg in December and January. The Johannesburg concert is scheduled for Jan. 9, 2027, at the Expo Centre in Nasrec.

The trajectory is striking, but Tyla’s appeal is not simply a story of an African artist entering Western pop. Her success has helped demonstrate that amapiano can travel without losing its geographical identity.

For a singer who once dreamed of seeing an African pop star become a global phenomenon, the distinction is significant. Tyla is no longer waiting for that moment. She has become part of it.
