Police have launched investigations into murder and rape following the discovery of the remains of an 18-year-old girl who had been reported missing in Boitekong, authorities said on Wednesday.

The victim, identified as Olebogeng Felicia Tagote, was last seen on May 24 after leaving school with a friend. Her disappearance prompted a search involving members of the South African Police Service (SAPS), Community in Blue volunteers and local residents.

The search came to a tragic end when human remains believed to be hers were found near a bridge along Bophuthatswana Road leading to Boitekong, close to a primary school. A family member who was present at the scene identified the remains.

“The South African Police Service has opened investigations into cases of murder and rape following the discovery of the remains of missing teenager Olebogeng Felicia Tagote,” said SAPS North West provincial spokesperson Warrant Officer Ofentse Mokgadi.

Police said the body was found in a partially decomposed state, making it difficult to immediately determine the cause of death. A post-mortem examination is expected to assist investigators in establishing how the teenager died.

Preliminary findings indicate that the victim may have been sexually assaulted before her death. Investigators added a rape charge after discovering that she was partially clothed when her remains were found.

“The body was found in a partially decomposed state and the cause of death is yet to be determined. Preliminary investigations suggest that the victim may have been sexually assaulted, and a rape charge has consequently been added to the investigation,” Mokgadi said.

The killing has sent shockwaves through the Boitekong community and renewed concerns about violence against women and children in South Africa.

South Africa continues to grapple with high levels of gender-based violence despite ongoing government interventions and public awareness campaigns. The country regularly records thousands of cases of rape and murder involving women and children each year, prompting calls for stronger prevention measures and improved support for victims.

The Acting District Commissioner of Bojanala Platinum Sub-District 2, Brigadier Mamotsamai Ntoagae, expressed condolences to the victim’s family and thanked police officers, Community in Blue members and residents who participated in the search operation.

“Our heartfelt condolences go to the family of Olebogeng Felicia Tagote during this difficult time. We also appreciate the commitment shown by SAPS members, Community in Blue and community members who assisted in the search efforts,” Ntoagae said.

Police have appealed to members of the public who may have information relating to the case to come forward as investigations continue.

Anyone with information that could assist investigators is urged to contact Detective Sergeant Patrick Sebalane on 060 142 0796 or Detective Sergeant Peter Mosete on 078 926 3810. Information can also be submitted anonymously through the Crime Stop hotline or via the MySAPS mobile application.
