Members of the South African National Defence Force and the South African Police Service officially launched Operation PROSPER on Friday, marking a coordinated effort to combat escalating gangsterism across the Eastern Cape.
The initiative was unveiled during a joint parade of security personnel, signaling a strengthened partnership between the country’s military and police services. The operation is expected to deploy integrated teams in intelligence driven missions targeting identified crime hotspots throughout the province.
Authorities say the campaign forms part of a broader government strategy to restore law and order in communities heavily affected by violent criminal activity. By combining resources and expertise, officials aim to disrupt and dismantle organized criminal networks operating in the region.
Lieutenant General Vuyisile Ncata, the provincial commissioner of the police service in the Eastern Cape, said the primary objective of Operation PROSPER is to “restore peace and dignity” to affected communities. He noted that closer collaboration between law enforcement and military structures would enhance operational effectiveness and improve the ability to respond swiftly to threats.
“The integrated approach ensures that we maximise our capabilities and close the gaps that criminals often exploit,” Ncata said during the launch.
Officials also called on residents to support the initiative by cooperating with authorities and providing information that could assist ongoing investigations. Community members were further urged to refrain from acts of mob justice, which authorities warned could undermine legal processes and contribute to instability.
Colonel Thembinkosi Ntobela, Officer Commanding of the Joint Tactical Headquarters in the province, said the operation aligns with the constitutional mandate of the defence force to safeguard the Republic and support internal security when necessary.
He reaffirmed the military’s readiness to work alongside the police, adding that the collaboration demonstrates a unified commitment to ensuring the safety of all citizens.
Operation PROSPER, officials said, sends a clear message that gangsterism and criminality will not be tolerated, as security forces intensify efforts to bring stability to one of South Africa’s most crime affected provinces.
