A 56 year old male teacher appeared before the Mahwelereng Magistrate in Limpopo on Wednesday, March 18, 2026, charged in connection with the alleged rape of an 18 year old learner at a local secondary school.
The suspect, whose identity has not been publicly released pending further proceedings, was remanded in custody following the brief court appearance. The case has been postponed to Wednesday, March 25, 2026, to allow for additional investigation by the South African Police Service (SAPS).
According to Colonel Malesela Ledwaba of the SAPS in Limpopo, the alleged incident took place on school premises in the Mahwelereng policing area. Police said the learner had reportedly been confronted by the educator after being suspected of using a cellphone during an examination. The device was confiscated, and the student was later instructed to return to the school with money in order to retrieve it.
Upon her return, the educator directed the learner to follow him to a restroom on the premises, where the reported assault occurred.
Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe, the Provincial Commissioner of Police in Limpopo, emphasized the force’s resolve in addressing such cases.
The police remain committed to ensuring that perpetrators of gender based violence are brought to justice.
