Mamelodi Sundowns reignited the Betway Premiership title race with a hard fought 2-1 victory over league leaders Orlando Pirates at FNB Stadium on Wednesday night, snapping the Buccaneers’ 14 match unbeaten streak in the competition.
Colombian forward Brayan León proved the difference, scoring twice in the first half to give the visitors a commanding lead before Pirates pulled one back early in the second period through a deflected effort from Patrick Maswanganyi.
The result sees Sundowns close the gap at the top to just three points, keeping their pursuit of a potential ninth consecutive league title very much alive. Pirates, despite the defeat, only their third in the league this season and second at home, remain atop the standings.
The high stakes Soweto showdown between the league’s two most in form sides began tentatively, with both teams showing early nerves. Pirates nearly capitalized in the sixth minute when a misplaced pass from Grant Kekana fell to Deon Hotto, whose deflected shot wrongbfooted goalkeeper Ronwen Williams. The Sundowns captain produced a stunning acrobatic save with his right foot to tip the ball out for a corner.
The Buccaneers continued to press, with Yanela Mbuthuma drawing another sharp save from Williams in the 15th minute after connecting with a precise cross from Oswin Appollis. However, Sundowns’ clinical edge proved decisive.
In the 37th minute, the Brazilians launched a swift counterattack. Nuno Santos delivered a long pass forward, and León outpaced the defense to slot home a composed finish from the right side. Just four minutes later, León struck again, toe poking in a low cross from Aubrey Modiba after another well constructed move, sending Sundowns into halftime with a 2-0 advantage.
Pirates responded emphatically after the break. Mbuthuma rattled the crossbar seconds into the second half, and from the ensuing play, Maswanganyi’s long-range shot took a deflection, wrong footing Williams and nestling into the net to halve the deficit in the 47th minute.
The hosts poured forward in search of an equalizer, with shots from Hotto and Masindi Nemtajela testing Williams, though lacking the power to beat him. Sundowns threatened on the break, with Teboho Mokoena forcing a save from Sipho Chaine and Khulumani Ndamane hitting the crossbar with a powerful header from a corner.
Despite late end tobend action, Pirates could not find a way through as Sundowns managed the game expertly, running down the clock to secure the three points.
