Northern Cape Police have arrested two suspects aged 41 and 42 after they were found busy packaging counterfeit yeast.

The two were arrested in Hartswater on Thursday 28 February 2019 after Police received information about illegal packaging and distribution of counterfeit yeast into the market from Hartswater.

Upon investigation and search on the premises of the suspect, high quality machinery which are instrumental in packaging and branding of counterfeit yeast products were found inside an operational storage room. Police confiscated counterfeit yeast worth R2 million including packaging and branding machinery.

According to Northern Cape Police Lt Cool Gamieldies, one of the suspects was arrested in July 2018 for similar offences and is currently out on bail.

At the time of his first arrest, Hartswater K9 Unit closed down a counterfeit factory that was illegally producing food products, which included instant yeast, baking powder, seasoning spices and manufacturing sanitary towels and shoe polish.

The Police have condemned the illegal operations such as this since they endanger people’s health and cripples the Country’s economy.

The suspects will appear before the Hartswater Magistrate Court on Monday 4 March 2018 on charges of possession, manufacturing and distribution of counterfeit goods.
