The DA in Dihlabeng Local Municipality has written to the Speaker requesting that he brings the Mayor, Lindiwe Makhalema to the Council to be held accountable.

This after the African National Congress has given her back the Mayoral position she lost after being suspended for calling President Cyril Ramaphosa a sellout in a Facebook post.

Dihlabeng is one of the Municipalities that is indebted to Eskom, it owns the power utility R196 million according to reports. Earlier in the year residents in Bethlehem took to the streets protesting lack of service delivery and also called on Makhalema to resign.

The DA’s Eric Motloung says as the party they want the Mayor to come and account to the council about the state the Municipality finds itself in. According to him, only council is allowed to suspend the Mayor, so by suspending and redeploying Makhalema, the ANC did what ‘is not in align with the state of affairs in Dihlabeng.’
