The Gauteng Health Department says the Charlotte Maxeke Academic Hospital is down referring patients to district hospitals in order to reduce waiting lists and times.

The Department says medical personnel at district hospitals are assisted by specialist from the Charlotte Maxeke Academic Hospital.

Different hospitals within Gauteng districts have been authorised to perform different operations.

    • Bertha Gxowa Hospital in Germiston performs foot and ankle surgery, breasts, appendicectomy, lumps and bumps, haemorrhodectomy, drainage of minor abscesses and benign gynaecological operations.
    • Edenvale Hospital performs hernia surgery and closure of colostomy
    • Far East Rand Hospital performs hand colonoscopy, colorectal surgery and wound management
    • Leratong Hospital performs upper gastrointestinal tract, endocrine sarcoma, trauma and burn care
    • Pholosong Hospital performs breast and hernia surgery
    • South Rand Hospital performs diagnostic gastrointestinal tract endoscopy, hernia, drainage of abscesses, appendicectomy and benign gynaecological operations
    • Tambo Memorial Hospital performs hepato pancreato biliary, gastrointestinal endoscopy, trauma and acute care surgery.

The health department has appealed to the public to follow proper referral procedure should they be diagnosed with any of the illnesses stated above.
