The Drakenstein Municipality has recorded its lowest water loss since 1999.

According to the Municipal Executive Mayor, Conrad Poole; in 1999 water losses in Drakenstein stood at 34% and in 2018, the figure is at 11% as compared to a national average of 37%.

After experiencing water losses in 1999, the Municipality was forced to investigate the reason for the high figure and to find ways to mitigate the losses.

The Municipality began prioritising projects that involved pipe replacements, the replacement of bulk and domestic water meters, pressure management, leak detection and repair, public awareness and upgrading information and management tools.

The Executive Mayor has encouraged the community to continue saving water given the extent of water shortage in the entire Western Cape.

We thank the Drakenstein community for remaining alert and regularly reporting water leaks to the municipality, while we celebrate the arrival of the winter rains, Drakenstein cannot take our foot off the water-saving accelerator. Now, more than ever, it is crucial to save every drop- so that we can avoid a Day Zero scenario when we move into summer.

The Municipality has further committed to preserve current water resources, establish new ones and putting in place winter water storage areas.

For information and to report pipe bursts and water wastage, community members are encouraged to contact Drakenstein Municipality’s Water Service Department at (021) 807 4715.
