At SAMA32, Tyla Becomes a Symbol of South Africa’s Global Musical Reach

The South African Music Awards have long been a measure of success at home. For Tyla, SAMA32 offers something slightly different: a chance for the industry that watched her rise to recognise how far that success has travelled.

On Saturday, the 24 year old Johannesburg born singer will receive the International Achievement Award, becoming only the second artist, alongside Black Coffee, to receive the honour twice. Tyla first collected the award at SAMA30 in 2024.

The timing is significant. Since that first SAMA recognition, Tyla has strengthened her position as one of the most internationally visible South African musicians of her generation.

Her breakthrough single, “Water,” helped establish the distinctive sound that has become central to her international identity. The record brought amapiano-influenced rhythms into a global pop setting and earned her the inaugural Grammy for Best African Music Performance in 2024. Two years later, she won the category again, this time for “Push 2 Start.”

Those achievements have altered the meaning of an award that once celebrated her arrival on the international stage. At SAMA32, the same trophy recognises continuity: a South African artist who has continued to expand her audience without abandoning the musical culture that helped define her.

The award is being sponsored by AfriPure, whose representatives have described the partnership as a way of celebrating Tyla’s international achievements while highlighting her South African roots.

That homecoming is taking place against a larger backdrop. SAMA32 is being staged at the Sun City Superbowl in the North West as a “Homecoming Edition,” with organisers emphasising the province’s long association with the awards and their potential contribution to tourism and the creative economy.

The ceremony is also entering its final hours as one of the most closely watched events on the South African entertainment calendar. The Top Five categories including Album of the Year and Female Artist of the Year have been announced, with Hle and Amadodana Ase Wesile among the leading nominees.

Tyla’s role is different. She is not returning to compete for a breakthrough. She is returning as an artist whose international career has become part of South Africa’s cultural export story.

That distinction may ultimately make her SAMA32 moment more significant than another trophy. It is a homecoming for an artist who has spent the past several years showing international audiences just how far South African music can travel.
