A 35 year old man has been charged with possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition after South African police swooped on a tip off in Mooinooi, North West province.

The suspect was already in custody over an armed robbery and kidnapping in the area earlier in April 2026 when intelligence from Brits Crime Intelligence led officers to a stash of weapons in nearby Bapong.

Four firearms and ammunition were recovered and immediately confiscated on Saturday, April 4.

    The haul included:

    • One 9mm pistol with the serial number filed off and four rounds of ammunition
    • One 7.65mm pistol with the serial number filed off
    • One silver revolver with the serial number filed off and two rounds of ammunition
    • One black pellet gun

Officers from the Brits Trio Task Team, Public Order Policing and Mooinooi Visible Policing carried out the intelligence driven operation.

The Local Criminal Record Centre processed the seized items.

The suspect is due to appear before Brits Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday, April 7.

Constable Thuto Bobelo, for the South African Police Service in North West, confirmed the arrest.

Acting Provincial Commissioner Major General Dr Ryno Naidoo praised the team involved and stressed the importance of intelligence led operations.

He urged officers to keep up the pressure to get illegal firearms off the streets and out of communities.
