Police in the Free State province removed significant quantities of illicit drugs from circulation over the past 24 hours through targeted patrols and community intelligence, resulting in the arrests of three men on charges of possession and dealing.

In a media statement, Sergeant Mahlomola Kareli of the South African Police Service said members of the Welkom Public Order Policing (POP) Platoon 1 acted on tip offs and conducted operations in several areas.

On Sunday, February 15, 2026, during crime combating patrols in Sandania, officers were approached by a concerned community member reporting drug dealing on a street corner. They intercepted a 19 year old male in possession of Mandrax tablets. Further investigation led to the suspect’s rented room in Doorn, where a search uncovered additional drugs. The teenager was arrested and charged with possession of and dealing in drugs.

In the early hours of Monday, February 16, 2026, the unit focused on Welkom suburbs following reports of a 22 year old foreign national allegedly dealing from his residence. A tactical search revealed a bag containing Mandrax, Crystal Meth and cash. The suspect was arrested for dealing and possession of drugs.

Drugs have become a major problem in South African Communities.

The operation extended to a second address in Rheeders Park, where officers discovered Mandrax tablets and Crystal Meth. A 49 year old male was apprehended at the scene and faces charges of possession of drugs.

Sergeant Kareli stated that all three suspects are in custody and expected to appear in the Welkom Magistrate’s Court soon.

The actions follow a series of strategic patrols and community-led tip-offs in the Welkom area, highlighting ongoing efforts to combat drug related crime in the region.
