Limpopo, Northern Cape – In a series of significant operations, South African police have successfully dismantled drug laboratories, apprehended suspects involved in serious crimes, and removed substantial quantities of illicit substances from the streets.

    Drug Lab Bust in Limpopo

On July 19, 2024, the Minister of Police, Mr. Senzo Mchunu, lauded the remarkable arrests made following the discovery of a large-scale drug laboratory in Groblersdal. This operation, led by the Limpopo Hawks and supported by the Limpopo SAPS, resulted in the arrest of four suspects, including the farm owner and two Mexican nationals.

The joint effort by the Limpopo Serious Organised Crime Investigation (SOCI) team and the Limpopo Tactical Response Team led to the seizure of chemicals used in drug manufacturing, including acetone and crystal meth, with an estimated street value of R2 billion.

Mr. Mchunu highlighted the ongoing efforts to combat drug trafficking in the region, noting that since the beginning of the year, ten clandestine laboratories have been uncovered, and 34 arrests have been made.

The suspects are scheduled to appear in the Groblersdal Magistrate’s Court on July 22, 2024, facing charges of manufacturing, dealing, and possession of illicit drugs. The Hawks are continuing their investigation and have not ruled out further arrests.

Robbery and Firearms Arrest in Polokwane

In another notable operation, members of the Limpopo Provincial Organised Crime Investigation Unit, in collaboration with various law enforcement agencies, arrested a 41-year-old male suspect involved in multiple crimes.

On July 18, 2024, police conducted a targeted operation in Mamelodi Nellmapius, Pretoria, leading to the arrest of the suspect connected to a business robbery in February 2023. During the arrest, police recovered an unlicensed firearm, ammunition, jewellery, a large sum of money, and a stolen vehicle.

The Provincial Commissioner of Police in Limpopo, Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe, praised the team for their breakthrough. The suspect will appear before the District Court in Pretoria Central and the Magistrate’s Court in Sekhukhune, facing multiple charges related to robbery, firearm possession, and possession of stolen property.

Drug Seizures in the Northern Cape

Meanwhile, in the Northern Cape, valuable intelligence led to the interception of drugs worth R359,850 on July 19, 2024. The police, acting on information about drug activities along the N14 road between Kakamas and Pofadder, executed searches in various veld areas, uncovering 1585 mandrax tablets and tik valued at R185,850 and R174,000 respectively.

The Northern Cape Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Koliswa Otola, expressed elation over the removal of these drugs from the streets, emphasizing the commitment to eradicating drug-related activities in the community. While no arrests were made, an enquiry has been registered for further investigation.
