South African police in Mpumalanga province arrested eight suspects and seized five AK-47 rifles, explosives and three stolen vehicles in a raid on Monday that thwarted a planned robbery, authorities said.

The operation, conducted in Vosman near Witbank, followed intelligence gathered on Friday indicating that a group of heavily armed individuals had gathered at a house on a plot to prepare for a robbery, according to a statement by Brigadier Donald Mdhluli of the South African Police Service (SAPS) in Mpumalanga.

A joint team comprising the Pienaar and Witbank Tactical Response Teams, the Tracking Team, the Nkangala District Anti-Hijacking Task Team, the Middelburg Flying Squad and private firm Tracker Connect located the hideout. When officers approached, the suspects attempted to flee but were cornered and apprehended, the statement said.

The eight suspects, aged between 29 and 51, face charges including illegal possession of explosives, firearms, ammunition and suspected stolen vehicles. Police said additional charges could be added as the investigation continues.

Among the recovered vehicles were an Audi A4 with Gauteng registration plates, reported stolen in Sunnyside, Gauteng, in November 2025; a GWM Florid with Mpumalanga plates; and a Toyota Fortuner with Eastern Cape plates, reported stolen in Fish Hoek, Western Cape, in June 2025.

The raid took place hours after Deputy Minister of Police Cassel Mathale visited Safer Festive Season Operations in Nkangala district, accompanied by senior SAPS officials including Lt. Gen. Tebello Mosikili, Simemosenkosi Chamane and Acting Provincial Commissioner Maj. Gen. (Dr) Zeph Mkhwanazi.

Maj. Gen. Mkhwanazi commended the operation, saying: “This breakthrough demonstrates our unwavering resolve to confront and dismantle criminal activities in our communities. We call upon the public to partner with us in fostering a safer environment. We send a clear message to those engaging in criminal endeavors: it is only a matter of time before justice is served.”
